Durga is the form of Mother goddess in Shaktism. There are many incarnations of Goddess Durga: Kali, Renu(or)Renuka, Bhagvati, Bhavani, Ambika, Lalita, Gauri, Kandalini, Jaya, Rajeswari and has nine appellations: Skandamata, Kushmanda, Shailaputri, Kaalratri, Brahmacharini, Maha Gauri, Katyayani, Chandraghanta and Siddhidatri. A list of 108 names that is used to describe her is very popularly in use by eastern Hindus and is called Ashtottara Shatanamavali of Goddess Durga.

Maa Durga is the epitome of a true womanhood. She is the Mother of the entire Universe. She takes care of the created universe and protects all beings. When the beings fall in ignorance, she removes the veil of ignorance and uplifts her children from all miseries. Maa Durga is the nurturer, caregiver, protector and when necessary, the destroyer. She loves as fiercely as she hates. Maa Durga is the truest manifestation of Shakti and the core essence of the whole cosmos at its roots. ust as nature requires male and female energies to come together to procreate, the creation of the universe required divine male and female energies. There Maa Durga took form from the male trinity and came to be known as Shakti. In Hinduism, Lord Shiva is the male energy and Maa Shakti is the female energy. Thus together they both came to create, sustain and destroy the universe at their will.
Durga (Hindustani pronunciation: [ˈd̪uːrɡaː]; Sanskrit:दुर्गा), meaning "the inaccessible" or "the invincible", is the most popular incarnation of Devi and one of the main forms of the Goddess Shakti in the Hindu pantheon. Durga is the original manifested form of Mother Adi-Parashakti. The Devi Gita, also known as Parvati Gita, declares her to be the greatest Goddess. Thus, she is considered the supreme goddess and primary deity in Shaktism, occupying a place similar to Lord Krishna in Vaishnavism.

A demon,Mahishasura performed penance with great dedication and he obtained the boon to not get killed either by man or God. Shiva granted the boon, which made the Asura arrogant and he wanted to rule the heaven. He created problems and unleashed a reign of terror. He initiated a further attack on heaven which made the Gods assemble for finding a remedy to get rid of the nuisance of Mahishasura.
A solution was found by creating Durga and amalgamating the powers of all the Male Gods. She tried to kill Mahishasura but he kept hiding by disguising himself for 8 days and on 9th day Durga was able to find him and slayed his head. This is the myth behind the Navaratri. Navaratri symbolizes the victory of knowledge over ignorance.
