Earth’s Magnetic Field is Weakening Fast! What It Means for Satellites & Navigation
Scientists warn that Earth’s magnetic field is weakening, having dropped about 9–10% globally over the last 200 years. A particularly large weak spot, called the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), is growing, letting more charged particles reach satellites in low-Earth orbit.
Data from ESA’s Swarm satellites shows the weakening may be accelerating, with some regions declining 10 times faster than previously thought. Meanwhile, Magnetic North is shifting toward Siberia, affecting compasses and navigation systems.
