Scientists have solved a 13-billion-year-old mystery about the Milky Way's elements with the discovery of an ancient star, SMSS J200322.14-114203.3. Previously, neutron star mergers were thought to be the only source of heavy elements like uranium and gold. However, new research shows these elements may have formed through a magnetorotational hypernova, a rare stellar explosion of a rapidly spinning star. Additionally, studies reveal that the Milky Way's star formation was influenced by past collisions with the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, triggering bursts of new stars over billions of years.
