Police in the UK have begun preliminary tests on a new scanner designed by Manchester Metropolitan University which, used like a radar speed gun, can scan for concealed weapons at long range as people pass by. Police target a suspect with the scanner, which then emits microwave radiation towards them. The returned signals are analysed to predict whether the person is carrying a gun (or in future versions a knife), or just loose change. Further details of the scanner are secret, but it could be released within two years.
