Official recognition for Syria's opposition coalition has grown, with acknowledgement coming from the US-founded international Friends of Syria group, who are meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.
Less than 24 hours before, came recognition from the US itself, which confirmed it now considers the opposition coalition to be the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
Moscow is criticising the move by Washington, accusing the US of favouring an opposition victory achieved through violent means.
"As the coalition has been recognised as the only legitimate representative, it seems that the United States decided to place all bets on the armed victory of this same national coalition," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The Marrakech endorsement is the latest in a series of diplomatic victories for the Syrian opposition coalition. It has already been recognised by the UK, France, Turkey and a number of Gulf states.
US President Barack Obama has recognized the main Syrian opposition group as a "legitimate representative" of the Syrian people. This brings the US in line with its allies, including Britain, France and several Arab states.
