NATO has agreed to provide Turkey with an advanced Patriot missile system to defend its borders against Syrian attack.
Turkey has been talking to its allies about how to bolster security along its 900 kilometre frontier with Syria, after Syrian mortar rounds landed on its territory.
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu made the announcement in the capital Ankara:
"The countries who supply NATO with Patriot systems are known, we have reached agreement with those countries. The official application will be completed as soon as possible.
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that any Patriot deployment in Turkey would be a defensive measure and not to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria.
Syrian rebels have requested an internationally enforced no-fly zone to protect themselves against Assad's airpower.
Only the US, the Netherlands and Germany have the appropriate Patriot systems available.
