A Nigerian man who tried to blow up a US plane with a bomb hidden in his underwear has been sentenced to life in prison. A federal judge in Detroit handed down the punishment to 25-year old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, noting he had shown no remorse for the attempted attack on a Delta Airlines flight to Amsterdam on Christmas Day 2009.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian who tried to blow up a flight near Detroit on behalf of al-Qaida, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. The mandatory punishment Thursday for was never in doubt after he pleaded guilty. (Feb. 16)
