An Egyptian court has sentenced 28 people to death over the assassination of the country’s late prosecutor general in 2015. Fifteen others were sentenced to life and 8 more to fifteen years in prison over the death of then General Prosecutor Hisham Barakat. The court sentenced 31 people in June and then referred the case to the Egyptian top cleric for consultation. The verdict can be appealed at Egypt’s top court. Speaking after the trial, the defendants’ lawyer described the ruling as shocking.
