With the recent downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, many are once again questioning what can be done to protect civilian aircraft from missiles and other projectiles. The idea gaining the most traction is equipping airliners with anti-missile defense systems mounted on the belly of the crafts. Using lasers, the systems would lock onto incoming projectiles and scramble their electronics, causing them to explode a safe distance from the plane.
