The Italian navy has rescued more than 1,100 migrants from nine large rafts in the waters off Sicily. Patrol helicopters spotted the overcrowded rafts and four navy vessels took part in the rescue on Thursday. The number of sea arrivals to Italy more than tripled in 2013 from the previous year. The Governments of Italy, Greece and the island of Malta have called on the EU to make a more robust and coordinated response. Many migrants have died making the journey between Africa and Europe. Last October saw 366 Eritreans drown in a shipwreck near the island of Lampedusa. A week later another 200 migrants, mainly Syrians, died in a second shipwreck. Report by Ashley Fudge.
